ORAKEL study
Research into earlier identification of depressive relapse
What is the study about?
ORAKEL investigates whether changes in voice, speech, facial expression and movement provide information about later depressive relapse. Repeated clinical assessments are combined with audio and video recordings. AI-based analysis is a research procedure. It does not replace clinical assessment or provide a validated individual relapse prediction.
Six visits over 48 weeks
Following clinical stabilisation, visits are scheduled at baseline and after 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 weeks. Each visit takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes and includes clinical interviews, psychological questionnaires and audio and video recordings.
Regular treatment remains unchanged. Participants receive regular medical and psychological assessments and accompanying care through the university psychiatric outpatient clinic. The study flyer specifies compensation of €15 per attended visit.
Who may be eligible?
The published study information addresses adults aged 18 to 65 with recurrent unipolar depression and a current depressive episode. The study team will discuss eligibility, current participation opportunities and further criteria with you.
Participation is voluntary and may be ended without disadvantage. Before enrolment, the team explains procedures, consent and the handling of data already collected.
How are data protected?Recordings, consent and confidentiality
Published study information describes pseudonymised, confidential processing. Pseudonymisation replaces identifying information with a code; it is not equivalent to full anonymity. Audio and video recordings require particular protection.
The current participant information and consent documents provided by the study team are authoritative. The study has been approved by the Medical Faculty ethics committee.

Study psychologists
Moritz Neveling and Juliane Thomas are psychologists with Master’s degrees and members of the ORAKEL study team.
Collaboration and funding
ORAKEL is conducted with the Neuro-Information Technology group at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. It is funded through Saxony-Anhalt WISSENSCHAFT – Research and Innovation, using European Regional Development Fund (ERDF 2021–2027) and Saxony-Anhalt state funds. The confirmed funding period runs from 2024 to 31 December 2027.
