SASLAB is the Johann Steiner Research Group’s Laboratory for Translational Psychiatry at University Medicine Magdeburg.
Our scientific profile
We investigate schizophrenia and mood disorders from clinical and biological perspectives. Shared features across diagnoses are as important as variation within a disorder. Clinical cohorts, laboratory analyses, brain tissue and data science provide complementary approaches.
The group is based at the University Clinic of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Collaborations connect it with clinical and basic-science disciplines and the German Center for Mental Health.
Johann Steiner
Johann Steiner leads SASLAB and is W2 Professor of Translational Psychiatry and permanent deputy to the director of the University Clinic of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Magdeburg. A specialist in neurology and in psychiatry and psychotherapy, he combines clinical work with research into the neurobiology of mental illness.
His current responsibilities include medical leadership of FeTZ, leadership of the ORAKEL study and of the Magdeburg contribution to DZPG subproject JE4. He provides senior clinical supervision on ward Psy04, which focuses on psychotic disorders.
Selected career milestones
- 2000: Medical doctorate, Institute of Pathology, Ludwig Maximilian University Munich.
- 2009: Habilitation in Psychiatry, University of Magdeburg.
- 2013: Appointment as Associate Professor (außerplanmäßiger Professor).
- Since 2019: W2 Professorship in Translational Psychiatry.
- September 2021 to January 2024: Acting Director of the University Clinic of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
The name SASLAB
The name originated from the former Schizoaffective Spectrum Laboratory. Today, SASLAB is the Laboratory for Translational Psychiatry, reflecting a broader clinical, immunological and methodological profile.
